About.
As customers walk through the door at In the Clover, some comment that it is a spa-like space while others say they feel calm and happy but mostly people say “oh-it smells so good in here....”
All of these comments epitomize Kelley Belangers’ goals in creating In the Clover. Kelley began working in retail at age 15, learning the fine art of customer service at an old fashioned ladies haberdashery store in Indianapolis Indiana.
Many years later, with a college degree in merchandising and marketing, Kelley worked for stores large and small in both buying and management, all the time adding to her knowledge of retail.
After leaving her 15 year position of buying and management at a food and clothing store in Damariscotta, Maine, Kelley decided to pursue a lifetime dream of attending cooking school in Provence. This was a chance to reconnect with her previous experiences as a high school exchange student in Aix-en-Provence, France. As it turned out, traveling and cooking in the Luberon became a period of soul-searching and personal growth, the creative well-spring from which In the Clover was born.
“I wanted to create a place of well-being to serve the needs of men as well as women and children. A place where one could find helpful service, effective bodycare products from around the globe and hard to find fragrances with environmentally sensitive ingredients. Also, I wanted to provide affordably priced unique accessories and jewelry. I used European pharmacies and perfumeries as models, especially of my much- beloved France.”
After securing space in an historic brick building in the antiques capital of Maine, the village of Wiscasset, Kelley got to work, renovating the store with natural whitewashed woods, while retaining the European charm of granite faced large picture windows and open beamed ceilings from the 1800’s. As to the meaning of the name of the shop Kelley recalls: “I searched the thesaurus for words that denoted comfort and in the list that ensued was the phrase in the clover and it hit me—green, fresh, carefree, happy, abundant, old-fashioned...it fit my ideal of the store.”
